Artist's BioGay Empson Darroch was born and raised in Swan River, Manitoba, Canada. It is in a beautiful little valley situated between the Duck and the Porcupine Mountains in north central part of the province. A fairly remote little town that makes its livelihood from logging and farming. Plenty of lakes and rivers for a kid to explore and the home to bears, wolves, beavers and even eagles. As a child Gay spent all her free time exploring the woods and made a detailed book of the local flora and fauna complete with pictures. This was her first attempt at art and the beginning of her love for the land and its creatures. As all birds must leave the nest so did Gay. A lot of years slipped by with only the occasional visit home. In 96 she returned to care for her aging mother and found employment as manager of the local night spot. With her mother's passing she made plans for a return to the city only to discover that she had throat cancer. After a extreme reaction to radiation and a long recovery she was left with no voice. Not an easy thing for some one who liked to talk a lot! She quickly discovered that she could no longer remain in the normal work force. To keep her sanity she returned to her childhood passion of drawing and painting. "Anyone who has done battle with the beast, knows what a wreck it makes of your self esteem" she says in a whisper of a voice. "I call it my trial by fire." She decided to put some of her art into card format and raise money for cancer care. The sale was a huge success and gave her the needed confidence to continue with her art.Soon she was getting orders for paintings. When people began to ask where they could get the cards she applied for a business license and Artworks 13 was born. She now does several types of artworks, using many mediums. This last year she included jewelry making into her repertoire. Using only natural gemstone beads and real wood she has brought a unique style to this oldest of art forms. After working with the semiprecious stones she feels that each has its own properties that effect the wearer in a specific and positive way. (See list of gemstones and their properties)
